Our school recently had the pleasure of organising a wonderful History trip for parents to the historic town of Carlingford, strengthening the valuable connection between our school, families, and the wider local community.

The day began with a guided tour of the magnificent King John’s Castle, where parents explored one of Ireland’s finest examples of medieval Norman architecture. The tour offered fascinating insights into medieval life, defence, settlement, and the strategic importance of Carlingford throughout Irish history. Parents engaged in our key historical concepts such as continuity and change, evidence, chronology, and historical significance — all central to the History curriculum.

This was followed by a walking tour through the village of Carlingford, where parents had the opportunity to experience local history first hand by examining surviving medieval streetscapes, buildings, and landmarks. The visit encouraged historical enquiry and promoted an appreciation of how our local environment can act as a rich primary source for learning about the past.

The group then visited the Carlingford Heritage Centre, where the stories, traditions, and cultural heritage of the area were brought to life through engaging displays and discussion. This aspect of the trip highlighted the importance of heritage, identity and community within historical learning.

The day concluded with a relaxing visit to the park before parents enjoyed tea, coffee, and freshly baked scones in the Four Seasons Hotel Carlingford. The informal gathering provided a valuable opportunity for parents to connect with one another and with members of the school community.

This trip reflects the school’s ongoing commitment to the promotion of partnership, collaboration, wellbeing, and meaningful community engagement. It also fostered active learning, experiential education, and an appreciation of local heritage and culture.

Our school greatly values opportunities such as this to strengthen links between the school and parents while encouraging lifelong learning and shared experiences within our community. We thank all who attended and contributed to making the day such an enjoyable and enriching occasion.
